Christmas was a very popular time to get married amongst CIC employees, and there are happy scenes of blushing brides and proud fathers in virtually every January edition. Here are a s election from 1958, 1959, 1961, 1963 and 1965, both at Consett and the various UK regional offices. I particularly like the Morris-men guard of honour for Thomas Dobson and Jennie Blemings’s wedding in 1958 and the gift of a fine looking tea service for Eric Millhouse and Joan Ayton’s wedding in 1963.
Also of note is the marriage of Elaine Vernon in 1965, who was escorted to St Cuthbert’s Church by proud father Douglas. Many of you will know Douglas Vernon from his time at the Works and also as the author of Thread of Iron, a comprehensive history of the company, which has recently been re-released by our colleagues in Land of Oak and Iron. An excellent Christmas present, in my opinion (if you’re listening Santa).
