A celebration of women workers for International Women’s Day

Women of the Works: the story of the women who made steel

Victoria Stevens, History of Consett Steelworks Group

This presentation will use case studies of two remarkable Consett women, Theresa Roberts and Edyth Price, as exemplars for the social and economic changes to women’s employment throughout the C20th.

By showing overall trends of low skilled jobs and unequal pay and conditions against the increased status of women workers in both world wars, a picture will be drawn of what working life was like for the women who made steel.

Victoria Stevens was born in Consett, and lived in the area during the period of closure and its aftermath. She has a life-long interest in industrial archaeology, and a particular love of rope haulage, industrial transport and the history of the steel industry. She is an administrator of the History of Consett Steelworks Group.
