The Women’s Banner Group – We Do More Than Make Banners!

Laura Daly and Lynn Gibson, founder members of the Women’s Banner Group

We are fortunate to have members of the Women’s Banner Group to talk to us about their work, the group’s ethos and their future plans.

The Women’s Banner Group aims to support and celebrate all women in their roles within trade unions, politics and communities, with particular emphasis on recognition for historically important women of the Durham Coalfield who history has forgotten.

They use community engagement, education, history, creativity and any other tools at their disposal to promote equality, fairness, recognition and camaraderie. They strive to provide opportunities for women to connect and support each other and promote events that contribute to the personal development of their members.

In 2019 the Women’s Banner Group were funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to create a new silk banner. This banner was unveiled on International Women’s Day 2020 at Spennymoor Settlement.
